Brick Cracking
How Do I Know if the Cracks in My Bricks Are Cause for Concern?
There are many signs that point to potential foundation damage that even a layman can spot. At Van Matre Construction, we’ve seen more than our fair share of damaged basements, crawl spaces, and foundations here in Denver, and can properly assess your home. One of the signs we look for when inspecting a foundation is cracking bricks or masonry. Because masonry is a very rigid material and the mortar bonds have weak shear strength, any movement of the soil will cause the bricks and mortar to shift and crack. This is one thing to look out for if you are worried about damage to your home’s foundation.
Whenever you suspect that your foundation could be in trouble, it’s important to reach out to your local Denver foundation repair company, Van Matre Construction. We can thoroughly assess your home for damage, including inspecting your brickwork. Oftentimes, a stair-step crack is what we see when there is an underlying foundation issue. If we notice that brickwork is pulling away from the structure itself or we see leaning, sagging, or tilting brick walls, those are also indications of foundation settling. When you see brick cracking in your Denver home this may be a sign of foundation issues and you could benefit from foundation and crack brick repairs.
You may notice hairline cracks in your bricks, and this is normal and to be expected in a climate such as ours in Denver. But we recommend keeping an eye on these cracks and watching to see if any cracks change, grow in length, or expand wider over time. If your cracks are larger than ⅛” or are getting bigger, it’s time to call the Denver foundation repair team at Van Matre Construction!
We recommend walking around your property and paying attention to your masonry. Look for those stair-step cracks, other large cracks, or any areas where brickwork is pulling away from the structure. Then give us a call and we’ll have one of our highly trained foundation specialists inspect your home and give you a free repair estimate.
